James River

Being from Richmond, we take our Malibu Kayaks out on the James all the time, for short trips and all-day trips when we can. At Old Dominion Kayaks, we decided in early summer 2009 to travel the length of the James to see and fish the entire river and see how well the Malibu kayaks hold up under the diverse conditions presented by a mountains to bay trip. The following is a documentary of our trips from the headwaters in Iron Gate, VA to where the James meets the Chesapeake Bay at Fort Monroe, 340 miles later.
- Irongate to Springwood
- Springwood to Snowden
- Snowden to Lynchburg - Not recommended due to 7 not-easily-portaged dams on this 24-mile stretch of river.
- Lynchburg to Bent Creek
- Bent Creek to Howardsville
- Howardsville to Warren - Will have to get to this section next spring, when the water level in the Rockfish is higher and we can start in the Rockfish and come down to Howardsville and then down to Warren. As of June 2010, the Howardsville ramp is closed to the public. Check DGIF to see if it has re-opened.
- Warren to Scottsville
- Scottsville to New Canton/Bremo Bluff
- Bremo Bluff to Columbia
- Columbia to West View
- West View to Pony Pasture - We've done different sections on this stretch several times, but mostly we haven't done them since we decided to paddle the entire river, and as such don't have pics or decent descriptions of these trips.
- Pony Pasture to Reedy Creek
- Reedy Creek to Ancarrow's Landing
- Ancarrow's Landing to Deep Bottom
- Deep Bottom to Jordans Point
- Jordan's Point to Lawrence Lewis Jr. Park
- Lawrence Lewis Jr. Park to the Bay - Will have to wait a little bit. Jason just had his 3rd baby coming in the middle of August, and Brian will have his 2nd in January.
